Popular Myths:
Artemis and her twin Apollo were born to a mortal named Leto. Leto was cursed by Hera because Zeus had cheated on Hera with Leto. In this curse Leto was not allowed to give birth to a child on land, or an island. Leto eventually found the floating island of Delos, where she gave birth. In some myths Artemis was born first and helped with the delivery of Apollo.
Artemis has quite a temper when someone questions her hunting abilities and skills. This temper comes to play in lots of her myths. In one myth Artemis rescues a young, abandoned girl by sending a she-bear to raise her. When the girl is older she has hunting skills that rival Artemis', so Artemis gets jealous and sends another bear to kill her.
Artemis had one hunting partner, Orion. In most myths Apollo thinks that Artemis and Orion are getting too close, so he plays a nasty trick on Artemis. He turns Orion into a stag, and bets Artemis that she can't hit it. Artemis challenges his bet and shoots the stag (Orion) through the heart. When she finds out that she has killed Orion, Artemis picks up his body and scatters it into the night sky. That is supposedly how the constellation Orion was made. In other myths Artemis kills him on purpose because he is a better hunter. And in one it is said that Gaia sent a scorpion to kill him.
Artemis also doesn't like when people make fun of her family. As an example: When Niobe the Queen of Thebes said that she is better than Artemis's mother Leto because she has 7 boys and 7 girls, and Leto has one of each. Apollo and Artemis were furious with her, and so Apollo killed 6 boys, and Artemis killed 6 girls. The other boy and girl, and Niobe, were turned into stone by Artemis.
